The community of poets at poetrynight helped encourage him to grow. That soon turned into a Monday night ritual for Thom, and his words started to become more diverse in form and resonance. He began attending and sharing Haiku written about the world he saw while hiking and roaming the woods of WA State. Recently, Thom discovered the haven of poetrynight in Bellingham. Thom was convinced he could write a Norse Saga in the form of a Shakespearean Sonnet. His interest in poetry began while Thom was in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and took a poetry class at his local community college. Thom sits on the Board of Directors for poetrynight and often hosts the weekly Monday night reading. He is educated in the arts of Geology and Geography, and makes his career as an Environmental Consultant – cleaning up the Earth, one dirty hole at a time. And I play anywhere I can, mostly around Snohomish and King county. Well, I make rhythmic, melodic sounds that kind of resemble songs with a guitar shaped box and strings. Since then, he has explored major sites along the trail from St. John Burgess first intersected with the Lewis & Clark Trail at Three Forks in 1978 when working as the third man on a three-man survey crew in the Gallatin Valley of Montana. The work is a collage of poems, handwritten lists, typewriter poems, cartoons (aka graphic poems), a memo ir in 10 fragments, maps and reassembled texts that riff on the Journals. The book follows a narrative arc based on his intersections with the historic trail they forged. He is a two time Individual World Poetry Slam Finalist and an eight time coach of the Providence National Youth Slam Team, which placed second in the nation at Brave New Voices 2007. Jared Paul is writer, performance artist, and community organizer from Providence, RI. In my family this became known as “Eden’s Lament.” When I didn’t’ get my way, I would burst into mournful song. My mom tells me I first started composing songs at the age of 3. My songs are a reflection of the me I see and who I want to be. Like many young women these days I suffer media induced poor self image. I also play the piano and had a brief affair with the violin. Although I’ve had some formal training I am mostly self taught. I began playing the guitar at the age of 9.
