The growers had a popular saying, Vera Cruz recalls: that Filipinos made good farm workers because they were built close to the ground. Army, Vera Cruz came to the fields of the San Joaquin Valley.įor farmers in California, the Filipinos may have seemed the ideal “stoop labor.” They were young, single men who, because of restrictive immigration laws against Asians, could not bring their families here and could be housed in labor camps. In the spring of 1943, after a brief stint in the U.S. If I had my own family here, how could I support my family back home?” Then, he turns subdued: “I never even got married. (But) my brother and sister and all my brother’s six kids went to college.” “It took me my whole life to bring literacy to my family,” he says proudly. So he dropped out and went back to working in restaurants full-time. But the $2.50 a week he earned as a houseboy wasn’t enough to support his family back home. Laid off that same winter, the migrant worker began a lifetime of travels: busing tables at a Chicago restaurant, canning fish in Alaska, hoeing beets in North Dakota, picking grapes in the San Joaquin Valley.īy 1931, Vera Cruz had enrolled at Gonzaga University in Spokane. He wound up cutting boards at a box factory in Cosmopolis, Wash. Twenty-two-year-old Philip Villamin Vera Cruz left the Philippines in 1926, dreaming of going to college and becoming a lawyer. All those years, I was fighting for equality and justice, but I never got there. “The principle of justice is just a theory,” he says carefully. Strands of thick gray hair hang gracefully on his forehead, over the deep grooves that age and sun have left on his face. ![]() Vera Cruz is dressed in a well-worn, button-down white shirt, his pockets stuffed with pens and reading glasses as if he’s about to head into a union meeting. His story, like a whole generation of the manong, is a lost chapter in Filipino history and California labor history.” and has been incredibly courageous in pursuing what he thought was right. “Philip is truly a pioneer,” says Kent Wong, director of the UCLA Labor Center and president of the AFL-CIO’s Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance. But he represents a vital link to the past as one of the last living members of the manong: single Filipino men who came to America in the early 1900s to work in the fields, factories and canneries up and down the West Coast. Until recently, the 87-year-old labor leader had been largely forgotten. These days, Vera Cruz, who became the highest-ranking Filipino in the UFW, spends his time growing grapes in the back yard of his home here. Nor did he know that it would eventually lead to the formation of the United Farm Workers and change the face of American labor. He did not know then that the Delano grape strike launched by Filipino migrants would be the first shot in a bitter five-year war between migrant workers and California’s agricultural industry. ![]()

The LG WashTower is constructed from high-quality materials that ensure durability and strength. To help readers retain information during a meeting, printed materials and written notes have a big impact. From emails to memos, the current business structure communicates primarily using the written word. Luckily for readers, most organizations are set up to support their learning style. Those who learn best through reading and writing love interacting with text, which is more powerful for them than hearing or seeing images. Tools like and Zoom and GoToMeeting can all be used to record meetings. Make sure you record important meetings and presentations so that any auditory learner who missed it can go back in afterward and listen. Auditory learners are able to recall up to 75 percent of what they’ve heard.Īuditory learners are best served through in-person meetings, presentations, and conversations. Auditory communicators are typically talkative, enjoying discussions and debates, as well as telling stories or jokes. Making up about 30 percent of the population, auditory learners are best served by hearing information through conversations or lectures. Auditory learners want to hear from you directly 90 percent of online shoppers have said that videos are helpful in the decision-making process and 75 percent of executives report watching work-related videos at least once a week. Use screenshots, infographics, and video to get your message across. Visual communication can be used to communicate both internally within your organization and externally to customers. This is especially true in our fast-paced digital culture, where multi-tasking is the norm and attention spans are short. People retain 80 percent of what they see, compared to 20 percent of what they read and only 10 percent of what they hear. Studies have shown that the brain can process images and videos 60,000 times faster than text, making image-based communication remarkably valuable. Visuals add a component to communication that written and verbal methods do not: speed. Research has found that 65 percent of the general population are visual learners, meaning they need to see information in order to retain it. I'm like, ***, you put it out there that you're a girl. ![]() I hate that you're all hitting on me, just because I'm a girl. And then they're like, oh my God, I hate you, guys. My gamer tag is Pretty Girl 143 XO XO, whatever, you know. One of my pet peeves is just when girls are like, I'm a girl gamer. My gamer tag, ExSupervillain, it's like you can't tell if I'm a guy or a girl. And then at one point, he'll just be like, oh, so you do play games? I'm like, yeah, I do. But if it's a dude talking to me about video games, what he'll instantly do is he'll ask me questions to see if I actually really do play games. If two guys start talking about video games, it's cool. As a female in general, it really is hard to just prove that you do play games. I play for Machinima and I have a YouTube channel, where I just showcase all the games that I play, and I make random videos. I know all the PS3 fanboys are going to kill me for this, but sorry. I am currently playing "Call of Duty Black Ops 2" just to kill time until the new Xbox comes out. I recently beat "Bioshock Infinite." I think I beat that in about four days. A lot of girls are always out partying and drinking a lot, but I spend probably 99% of my time in my room, playing video games. I relate more to all the geeks and the nerds out there than the models and the go-go dancers. After this whole go-go dancing and modeling thing is over, I want to completely submerse myself in the gaming world. I pretty much got to dance in front of a crowd of 200,000 people. When I got approached to dance in Insomnia, I felt like a dream come true. And I've been dancing with them for about five years now. I also go-go dance for Insomniac Events, which is, basically, the company that throws Electric Daisy Carnival and Beyond Wonderland. But after a while, learning how to dance better and wearing really cute outfits and stuff, I just fell in love with it. I'll admit, I first started off go-go dancing, because I love the attention. I can dress up as anyone that I want to, and I can be that person for one day. It helps me be as many characters as I want to. I've wanted to model since I was about four years old, so it was like my main thing. I think they just should be called decorations, "car decorations." Nip slip. I don't think they should even be called import models. Can you bend over in front of this car? And also, when they call themselves a model, I think it's insulting to the real world of modeling. It's more like, hey, you have a half decent face, some ***, and ***. I think nowadays import modeling is for failed models. ![]() Hi, my name is Gina, and I am a go-go dancer and a model, but not an import model. ![]() |
